Biomass Feedstocks for Liquid Biofuels Production in Hawaii & Tropical Islands: A Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Many tropical islands, including Aruba, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Pacific Island countries, are entirely dependent on importing fossil fuels to meet their energy demands. Due global warming, improving use efficiency developing regionally available renewable resources necessary reduce carbon emissions. This review analyzed identified biomass feedstocks produce liquid biofuels targeting particularly focusing Hawaii as a case study. Transportation generation sectors consume 25.5% 11.6%, respectively, of Hawaii's imported fuels. Various nonedible with information availability, production, average yields oils, fiber, sugars, lipid content for production add value the total mix. The conversion technologies costs summarized. In addition, section potentially using sewage sludge biodiesel is also included. Based comparative analysis kamani, croton, pongamia, jatropha, energycane, Leucaena hybrid, gliricidia, eucalyptus feedstock resources, this study proposes that other similar regions can benefit from growing producing economical locally, especially transportation electricity

Manipulating microRNAs for improved biomass and biofuels from plant feedstocks.

Petroleum-based fuels are nonrenewable and unsustainable. Renewable sources of energy, such as lignocellulosic biofuels and plant metabolite-based drop-in fuels, can offset fossil fuel use and reverse environmental degradation through carbon sequestration. Despite these benefits, the lignocellulosic biofuels industry still faces many challenges, including the availability of economically viable...

Catalytic Hydroprocessing of Liquid Biomass for Biofuels Production

The depletion of world petroleum reserves and the increased concern on climate change has stimulated the recent interest in biofuels. The most common biofuels are based on energy crops and their products, i.e. vegetable oil for Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) biodiesel [1] and sugars/starch for bioethanol. However these first generation biofuels and associated production technologies face sever...

Feedstocks for lignocellulosic biofuels.

In 2008, the world produced approximately 87 gigaliters of liquid biofuels, which is roughly equal to the volume of liquid fuel consumed by Germany that year. Essentially, all of this biofuel was produced from crops developed for food production, raising concerns about the net energy and greenhouse gas effects and potential competition between use of land for production of fuels, food, animal f...

Plant triacylglycerols as feedstocks for the production of biofuels.

Triacylglycerols produced by plants are one of the most energy-rich and abundant forms of reduced carbon available from nature. Given their chemical similarities, plant oils represent a logical substitute for conventional diesel, a non-renewable energy source. However, as plant oils are too viscous for use in modern diesel engines, they are converted to fatty acid esters. The resulting fuel is ...
